Our reason for starting CV2K was based on our own experiences in public education. Our mother is a Special Education teacher and we watched our mother struggle to fund even the smallest initiatives for her students. Hours before and after school spent looking for an activity she wanted to do with them to keep them engaged or finding prizes for her treasure box to give them something to work towards. These initiatives not only required time, but they required money. No one sees the sacrifices these teachers make to even give their students the simplest things. Education is viewed by most in black and white, but there are so many shades of grey. Each student has their own wants, needs, and dreams. They all have different strengths and weaknesses. Different backgrounds. Different motivations. There are too many differences for the 1 size fits all approach. We believe experiences transcends those differences. Experiences are interpreted differently by everyone. Especially experiences that show them things they have not experienced before and new possibilities. Students experiencing uncharted waters together forms bonds within the student body. The student next to you that you didn’t think you had anything in common with is now a peer and maybe even a friend. Each student comes away with something different and it is this discourse that allows students to make the classroom learning more engaging and in-class discussions more meaningful
We want to help students gain these experiences by raising funds to provide Special Education teachers with the resources to take their lessons outside the classroom. In class work can introduce a lesson, but hands on experiences bring them to life.
